Wainwrights without a car

Is it possible to climb all 214 wainwrights without a car, whether it be by bus, train, bike or Shank’s pony? This was the question posed by the Eden Valley Mountaineering Club in 2022. Wainwrights without a Car is the story of how that challenge unfolded, and a lot more!
profits donated to local charities
With regards to the book “Wainwrights without a Car” the author and designer will not be taking any salary or income and others have given their time for free. About the Publisher

Ron first became involved with publishing when, in 1973, he and Stewart Wilson published a rock climbing guide to the newly developed crags at Lazonby and Armathwaite, in the Eden Valley. This was very much a basic and simple production with the pages being printed on a hand operated roneo system (remember – this was well before the days of photocopiers!) with the pages being stapled together – but it did the job !
Stewart and Ron then published a rock climbing guide under Pointer Publications in 1980, entitled Rock Climbers’ Guide North of England. This covered the often newly developed parts of the Eden Valley, Durham and North Yorkshire – the bit in between the more established rock climbing areas. Again it did the job to show what climbing there was in the area.
Ron Kenyon has lived in Penrith most of his life. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant and has always been interested in the fells and crags of the Lake District and beyond from a walking, rock climbing and fell running perspective.
Ron joined the Fell and Rock Climbing Club – the main club in the Lake District area which had been producing rock climbing guides to the Lake District since 1922. He was drawn into guidebook production co-authoring the Borrowdale guide in 1986 and author of the Borrowdale guide in 1990 and then Guidebook Secretary from the mid-1990’s overseeing, with the guidebook committee, the guidebook production, up to recently.
He has been involved with the local Eden Valley Mountaineering Club, since it started in 1973, and one of the members set a challenge for 2023 of completing the ascent of all the Wainwrights without a car. This was duly taken up, and during the year Ron thought up the idea of a book. He approached some publishers but was keen to publish this book himself – and here we are !
