Tales of more ascents

In 2023 members of the Eden Valley Mountaineering Club ascended all the Wainwrights and the book, Wainwrights without a Car, recalls all these ascents with accounts produced by the members and this was the basis for the book and its format.

During the year I climbed 86 of the summits and I am carrying on looking to ascend all 214 without a car. Details of these ascents are given on the Wainwrights without a Car Facebook page with photographs and I hope these will give you help in planning any walks of these fells and you enjoy these accounts.

Workington Bus Stations was opened on 19 March 1926 Cumberland Motor Services as the first purpose-built covered bus station in Great Britain. In March 2006, a request from the Workington and District Civic Trust to have the building listed was turned down as it was deemed to have had too many modifications. In October 2006, a plaque was added to the exterior of the building to commemorate its history. In 2019, the bus station was redecorated and paintings from local schoolchildren were installed on its interior walls.

In March 2026 it celebrated the centenary of operation.

On page 181 of the book there is mention of members of the Eden Valley Mountaineering Club running a relay over the Wainwrights in 1993. This challenge was taken up by the current members of the Club. Over 4 ½ days in June 2025 16 members ran around the 214 Wainwrights, following roughly the same route taken by Steve Birkenshaw.

Weather is often a big factor in multi-day activities and the relay started in fine conditions but it grew worse to torrential weather, which seemed to peak for the projected 7 hour leg over Wasdale Screes, Scafells, Bowfell and Crinkles which in the end took 11 hours !!

They all battled on and eventually returned to the Moot Hall, in Keswick.

As mentioned in the book there is no official bus stop at Scales and a bus will only stop if the driver of the bus considers stopping there is safe, so cannot be relied upon to stop. The underlying issues here are the following

The A66 is a major busy truck road.

Vehicles passing by do so at speed – legally 60mph but often faster.

The road narrows below Scales and not easy to widen to create appropriate bus stopping location.

There is idea of a central pedestrian island but concerns re the speeding traffic.

National Highways is the authoritative body which has determined that it is not safe for buses to stop here. Various ideas are being considered – see attached paper which I have put together. Stagecoach want to be able to stop but this is determined by National Highways. This is being considered by the local MP’s, Westmorland & Furness Council and Local Parish Council as well as local residents and Stagecoach and it is hoped that further communications with National Highways can find a way forward.

Needless to say this affects visitors and walkers looking to disembark and alight at Scales. At the moment this is an ongoing issue and the more National Highways are told that it is an issue the better.

If you have a comment or complaint about the situation will you please contact National Highways by email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk , Ref – A66 Bus Stop – ref 23617577 NHHC:08222000533

There was a lot of proofreading before the book was printed and published. It was amazing how many errors there were (including – “is there a comma there”) but eventually we had to sign off the book for printing.

I have been involved with publishing quite a few rock climbing guides and one finds that when you open the new guide an error leaps out! I am pleased to say I have found only two errors as follows

Page 42 – The Hadrian Wall Country Bus is the AD122 not AA122 – ie the date when Hadrian’s Wall was begun.

Page 169 – The column of page numbers is not centralised.

If you can see any other errors please let me know.
